Curriculum

The Innovative Materials program’s curriculum is designed to offer education in subjects such as polymer and inorganic material properties, material physics, and photonics in order to form a foundation for the creation of advanced functional and hybrid materials. The curriculum, which assumes a foundation of undergraduate-level education in subjects such as physical chemistry, polymer materials science, solid-state chemistry, and materials design, is structured so as to cultivate an understanding of the mechanisms by which the functions of substances such as photo-electronic materials, advanced functional fiber materials, and functional ceramic materials are expressed and the skills needed to apply that knowledge to the creation of new materials while facilitating the basic skills needed to apply that knowledge and those skills to the creation of practical materials. In addition to lecture courses in the following five principal categories, students will master not only scientific principles, but also techniques and methods through research and exercises. They will also develop their judgment and presentation skills through an increased number of opportunities for presenting findings to outside audiences.
