Curriculum
The Functional Chemistry program’s curriculum is designed to provide a graduate-level education in fields such as biologically relevant chemistry, analytical chemistry, molecular structural chemistry, biopolymer chemistry, and chemical engineering in order to help them develop a more advanced foundation for creating bio-functional substances and analyzing the functions of new substances. The curriculum, which assumes a foundation of undergraduate-level education in subjects such as physical chemistry, analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, polymer chemistry, and biologically relevant chemistry, is structured so as to cultivate an understanding of complex properties and structures of proteins, nucleic acids, polysaccharides, and physiologically active substances along with the skills needed to apply that knowledge to the creation of new substances. In addition, the curriculum provides a foundation in basic principles as well as measurement and analytical techniques of spectroscopy and analytical chemistry, which are necessary in order to conduct an advanced analysis of the functionality of various substances. In addition to lecture courses in the following five principal categories, students will master not only scientific principles, but also techniques and methods through research and exercises. They will also develop their judgment and presentation skills through an increased number of opportunities for presenting findings to outside audiences.
