3X3

In an effort to ensure ample learning time for students and improve their access to global educational opportunities, the Institute has revamped its undergraduate and graduate curriculums so as to structure four-year bachelor’s, two-year master’s, and three-year doctoral programs as a series of three 3-year programs in a radical reform of its educational approach that includes a restructuring of its educational and research organizations. By offering shared graduate educational programs that cut across individual fields of study in a way that is linked to PBL in collaboration with long-term overseas study opportunities, private industry, and other partners, KIT will be able to train professional engineers who are capable of contributing to their fields on the global level and send them out from its campus in Kyoto to the world.

The first step in bringing this vision to fruition is the adoption of a “3x3” structure that transforms the traditional four-year bachelor’s, two-year master’s, and three-year doctoral programs into three 3-year divisions in an effort to secure ample learning time for students. The second step is a radical reassessment of the master’s program’s academic calendar based on the introduction of a quarter system, enabling the Institute to improve students’ access to global educational opportunities and to markedly accelerate its own globalization. The third step is a reassessment of shared courses at the graduate level in order to build a liberal arts educational program that cuts across individual fields of study.

By offering various educational programs while carrying out the above three measures in an integrated manner, this project aims to train and graduate engineering professionals who combine engineering and liberal arts knowledge with managerial skills in a way that will allow them to parlay their specialized knowledge into the creation of innovation so that they can serve as global leaders with international careers.
